Choir

Music at St. Andrew's is led by music director Coralee Peterson, a concert trained pianist and vocalist. At St. Andrew's, music is a vital part of worship. Congregational singing is integral to our worship; both hymns and service music are sung at most of our services.

We continually expand our repertoire of hymns with a hymnChoir of the month program; and our service music changes with the liturgical seasons, offering us opportunities to learn new settings and to cycle in old favorites. The Church Hymnal 1982; Wonder, Love, and Praise (a supplement to the Hymnal); and Lift Every Voice and Sing are all resources that we use for congregational singing. We also have a small collection of old time hymns that we have put together and enjoy using for occasions such as our annual Ranch Mass.

The choir at St Andrew's meets seasonally, usually on Sunday mornings before the service; from September through December we focus on music for our season of creation (last 8 weeks of Pentecost), Advent, and Christmas. After a break in January, we meet again February through Easter, focusing on Lenten and Easter music. Always, the choir's first priority is to practice the hymns and service music being used, so we can support the congregational singing. Anthems are prepared and presented as time and resources allow. The choir also gathers on an occasional basis for special services such as a bishop's visitation or the Ranch Mass. Folks can feel free to join us for a season or a special occasion when their schedule allows without making a full time commitment.

Piano is our primary instrument for leading worship; there is an electronic organ also, which is used occasionally. Guitar players are recruited for informal gatherings from time to time. Special music for prelude, communion and postlude is varied; youngsters in the congregation who are studying a musical instrument are encouraged to share in this ministry, and there are often guest musicians who share their gifts with us. Cello, flute, violin, and others are heard in various combinations.

Music is an important part of our churchA children's choir sometimes prepares music for special seasons; last year the children sang at services on Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, at Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday. At Christmas, we also had a band; youngsters in the parish who participate in the band program at school expressed an interest in playing at church, so they provided prelude music for one of the services.

We strive to provide an atmosphere where the musical gifts of all the members, both adults and children, may be offered; and where we remember that we have a responsibility to offer our best in the worship of God Almighty.
